Apple TV+ has given an eight-episode series order to a one-hour drama inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel The Buccaneers, with Kristine Froseth (The Assistant), Alisha Boe (When You Finish Saving The World), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club), Imogen Waterhouse (The Outpost) and Mia Threapleton (Shadows) cast as the buccaneers.
Written by series creator Katherine Jakeways (Tracey Ullman’s Show, Where This Service Will Terminate) and directed by BAFTA winner Susanna White (Bleak House, Jane Eyre, Generation Kill), the as-yet untitled series is currently in production in Scotland.
The official logline: Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying ‘I do’ is just the beginning.
Froseth plays buccaneer Nan St. George, Boe is Conchita Closson, Totah portrays Mabel Elmsworth, along with Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth, Waterhouse as Jinny St. George and Threapleton as Honoria Marable.
Dunham will also star in her first movie in 11 years that explores female sexuality and recently wrapped production in Los Angeles.
Lena Dunham has just wrapped production in Los Angeles on Sharp Stick for FilmNation Entertainment.
Her first movie since Tiny Furniture 11 years ago, Dunham will star alongside Kristine Froseth, Taylour Paige, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jon Bernthal and Scott Speedman. Plot details for Sharp Stick are being kept under wraps, but the project returns Dunham to the familiar creative turf of female sexuality and portrayals.
“This story is incredibly personal to me and a continuation of my career long mission to create a free dialogue around the complexities of female sexuality and to turn the idea of the ‘likable’ female protagonist on its head – and you can’t do that in this business on any scale larger than your mother’s living room without forward thinking partners. I feel very lucky,” Dunham said in a statement.
Sharp Stick is written and directed by Dunham and produced under her company, Good Thing Going. The film, shot amid the pandemic, had a crew led by mostly female department heads.
FilmNation Entertainment financed the film, which is being introduced to buyers at the virtual Berlin market, and holds worldwide rights. Producers include Kevin Turen, Katia Washington, Michael P. Cohen and Dunham.
The film is executive produced by Kenneth Yu, Will Greenfield, Glen Basner, Ben Browning, Harrison Kreiss, Paige and Bernthal.

The upcoming Showtime series “The First Lady” has cast Kristine Froseth and Jayme Lawson, Variety has learned exclusively.
The pair join previously announced series stars Viola Davis and Michelle Pfeiffer, who will play Michelle Obama and Betty Ford respectively. Formerly known as “First Ladies,” the show is described as a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. The first season of the series will also explore the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, with that role yet to be cast. It will be produced by Lionsgate Television and Showtime.
Froseth will play a young Ford as she trains as a dancer for Martha Graham in New York City, and into her 20s in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she worked for Herpolsheimer’s Department Store and eventually married Gerald Ford. Froseth will recur in three episodes.
